Three civil rights workers disappear near Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney were stopped for speeding near Philadelphia, Mississippi. After being released from police custody, they are attacked by local residents. Their bodies are found buried in a nearby earthen dam on August 4, 1964. Former Ku Klux Klan member Edgar Ray Killen is found guilty of manslaughter in the case on June 21, 2005.
